How to set up mIRC

This example uses: mIRC 5.11, Netscape 4.03 and Windows 95

Setup under Windows NT 4.0 is exactly the same.
Setup under Windows 3.1 is different, but the configuration of the mIRC program is similar.

Part 3: Running mIRC for the first time and configuring it
Double-click the mIRC32 icon to start the program.

First say hello to Khaled Mardam-Bey, who so graciously let you have this software without paying for it first. Look at HOW TO REGISTER if you'd like to reward him for his efforts.

To stop this box from appearing again, un-check the check-box labeled INTRODUCTION.

mIRC needs some information about you and where you want to connect to do IRC chatting.

First, click ADD to add the server you want to use, if it's not on the list. The NewEarth BBS isn't on the list, so we'll add it now.

Fill in this information about the NewEarth BBS irc server.

Some people may need a password because their Internet provider's name server isn't working right. If mIRC ever asks for a password when you connect to NewEarth, contact the sysop.

Hit the ADD button.

Now tell it who you are, and what nicknames you would like to try first when you connect to IRC. I put my names in here. Please use your own name and e-mail address and don't copy mine.
Hit the OPTIONS tab.

Un-check "Pop up setup dialog on startup".

Hit OK.

Hit the IDENTD tab.

Check "Enable Identd server" and "Show Identd requests".

Put your name in the "User ID" box.

Now the Channels folder will pop up, and ask you which IRC channel you'd like to join.

Enter "#newearth" in the box on top. Then hit "ADD" and then "JOIN".

Un-check the "Pop up folder on connect" box.

If all went well, mIRC will now be displaying the #newearth chat channel window. Whatever you type will now be part of the conversation.
